Less than three months ago, Alvarado Street Brewery, a brewpub in Monterey, expanded to Salinas opening a tasting room in its brewing center. I'm not at all a beer drinker but headed over last week to see what's up. Located in the industrial center of the local ag industry, workers from nearby businesses seemed to have found the 8-seat bar for an after work gathering place.
I put together my own sampler of four 4-ounce tastes from the sixteen taps available.
Peninsula pilsner - Light and rather neutral impression, bitter note in the finish was too prominent for my taste.
Growers pale ale - Slightly hazy with an almost oily and mouth-coating texture, exotic fruits in the aroma with some vegetal elements aka musk melon meets carrot, flavorful enough to balance the bitter aftertaste for me.
The Boysen back in town - Refreshingly tart and light, flavored with boysenberries, crisp and clean, tapers down to a dry finish.
The Best part of waking up - Dark, coffee-infused milk stout, not as heavy bodied as I was expecting, smooth and creamy, easy for me to like.
On a second visit, I tried the Grains of Wrath, a saison with a touch of brett, and liked this most of all. Not sour, this had intricate floral and fruity aromas along with an earthiness from the wild yeast that contrasted with an otherwise ebullient and lighthearted personality.
Beers in cans can be purchased to take home. The machine for filling growlers was out of order, but presumably will be repaired some time soon. No food is served here, so patrons are welcome to bring their own eats. There's a taco truck a block away and the owner is encouraging food trucks to park here.
