When the friends said we were going somewhere local, casual, that’d been around for years but had recently had a makeover, we were at a loss to know where we might be going. The Market House is the original Victorian market hall in Altrincham which has been given the treatment and is now, erm, I suppose a fairly upmarket food court sort of thing. Big central area with tables and chairs which were packed, with groups hanging about waiting to pounce on any spaces that became vacant. And eight or nine outlets – most doing food with one coffee place and another beer/wine.
You order from the outlet. They bring food to your table when it’s ready. There’s other staff working all the tables clearing dirty crockery, replenishing cutlery, offering jugs of water.
Pizza was excellent. Crisp base incorporating lots of olive oil. Good tomato sauce.
Burger was similarly good. Beef & bone marrow, cooked to rare. Good bun that managed to stay together almost to the end. Excellent chips.
There’s another outlet that seems to do breakfasty things during the day and east asiany things in the evening. And the Great North Pie Co. who also sell their wares at a number of local farmers markets. Couple of others that sort of passed me by. What they could do with is an outlet doing desserts.
I liked it. And it’s good for celebrity spotting. Our score gets us one retired Premier League footballer and one current soap star.
