"Alphonso" mangoes in New Rochelle

I'm putting the name in quotes because I'm not exactly sure what I've got. The Alphonso has been talked about recently by hounds on the UK board, in London, and even more recently this Queen of Mangoes has arrived in Jackson Heights, Queens. It's a small mango from India and prized for it's superior flavor and texture.
So today when I was at Viva Grande market in New Rochelle I spotted a flat of mango-shaped fruit, sort of wizened, and smaller than mangoes I'm used to. Sure enough, they were labeled "Alphonso", but product of Mexico and 2 for a dollar!

I bought two (now I need to go back and buy more) and peeled it before I'd even unpacked my groceries. It may not be from India, but it's a wonderful mango. The pulp isn't fibrous or stringy, but smooth, juicy, and firm. Everything about it matches the description I read on the UK board.

If you're still reading, I highly recommend them.
