Almaty, Kazakhstan - Freshly-made Blinis from Stolichny

klyeoh | Dec 9, 201406:57 AM

One of the oldest supermarkets in Almaty is the upmarket Stolichny (Est. 1956) on the busy Kabanbai Batyr thoroughfare. It's well-stocked with all sorts of foodstuff and grocery items, and is open 24 hours.

At the main entrance of Stolichny is a food kiosk with 8 pancake pans manned by two women: the thin, freshly-cooked crepe-like "blinis" were kept warm in large steamers. The "blinis" were sold by weight: KZT60 (US 33 cents) for 100 grams - roughly about 3 blinis. I bought 200 grams (about 6 pieces) to bring back to my hotel room to try later.

It was a cold snowy evening, the temperature outside was a little below zero deg F when I bit into the first of the crepes I'd bought ... and regretted that I didn't buy more. The blinis were absolutely delicious! No wonder the local Kazakh customers were buying stacks: 1 kg (2.2 pounds) or more each to bring home!

I'm told by my local office colleagues that the "blinis" go very well with some sour cream ("smetana"). I don't know - I find the "blinis" to have such a delicious, delicate flavour and aroma, it'll be a pity to overwhelm those with "smetana". But then, who knows?
