Di Wang is the Chinese restaurant half of Line Brew Mix, which also has an American-style steakhouse within the same dining complex. The kitchen, helmed by a Singaporean chef (so I've heard) produced some surprisingly stellar Cantonese/Sichuanese dishes which I'd not expected to find in Almaty.
My lunch consisted of:
- Steamed shrimp dumplings ("har gow") which was beautiful to look at. The shrimps were somewhat similar to the tiny, freshwater variety of shellfish from Hangzhou, China. The skin was slightly chewier than I expected - probably the type of flour used here. The spicy chilli-bean sauce dip was fab.
- Sweet-sour pork: this was executed perfectly, with pineapple, onion and bell pepper pieces complementing the crisp, batter-fried pork. Very good.
- Spicy-sour-sweet Sichuanese-style eggplants were good.
- Yangzhou fried rice: drier than I'd preferred, and the "char-siu" (Chinese BBQ pork) was too dry & hard. The shrimps provide a welcome respite from the rather bland rendition.
Overall, great decor and ambience as the Line Brew chain does so well. Good food, but fairly high prices.
