We were so lucky to be in town when Alma Chocolate and Fifty-Licks Ice Cream co-hosted their first ice cream social. From our sampling of Latin food carts at Portland Mercado https://www.chowhound.com/post/portla..., we made our way to the Cardinal Club for Ice Cream Sundae Sunday.
Before coming to PDX, I had two bean-to-bar chocolatiers on my target list. Then my chow pal said, "Alma's better." When I looked into Alma, I discovered this event.
What a treasure hunt of wonderful confectionery and cookie bites from Alma and the Chocolate AF and Alma (lemon, basil, ganache) ice cream from Fifty-Licks. And I have to give a special shout out to Fifty-Licks for the coconut cream-based chocolate frozen dessert, the finest vegan ice "cream" I've run across so far with dense texture and velvety mouthfeel.
Packing a sundae bowl turned out to be even more challenging than tackling a salad bar. I managed to extend the walls of the cup slightly above the rim with strategic placement of the Genmai crisps chocolate bars and Matcha mint bar squares. Then I filled in the larger voids with pieces of toffee, cookies, candied nuts, exploded peanut butter, et al. And carefully drizzled salted caramel, strawberry compote, dark chocolate ganache, and blueberry compote into any crevices between. The fresh whipped cream was piled on sky high and I actually asked permission to return for more of this luscious dairy as a counterpoint to the confections and confitures.
Amidst all the good eats we enjoyed in Portland, I think this one got Cynsa the most excited. And I became a fan of both producers.
