I haven't posted much on Chowhound, but I thought that people who appreciate this gem of a restaurant that I recently found.
Alley House is a casual Chinese restaurant at the corner of Geary Ave and 2nd Ave. With a simple interior and open kitchen design, it doesn't immediately evoke "gourmet" when you first walk in. But one taste of the food and it quickly becomes obvious that the kitchen is one of the best in the SF Bay Area. It rivals many of the top restaurants I've had in China and Taiwan.
This place serves both Shanghai and Sichuan dishes. Their Mapo Tofu and Boiled Beef in Chili are examples of wonderful spicy, numbing, and not-too-salty Sichuan cuisine. You can ask the chef to customize the spice level. Their Spring Rolls are on point, with super crispy exteriors and soft, warm interiors. Their Spicy Sauce Dumplings are perfectly flavored bites of hotness and savoriness. Their Sautéed Shrimps are simple but perfectly flavored when paired with the accompanying vinegar.
Service is friendly and straightforward. The owner is passionate about his food and restaurant.
This is not just another Chinese restaurant. It's a place packed with flavor and culinary talent and the SF dining scene is better with it in our midst.
