Ali's vs.Singh's; in the trenches of the Roti Wars

A fortuitous parking space on Morton Street finally let me try Ali's Roti, in Mattapan...I've been trying to compare them for months to my favorite Roti shop, Singh's, on Columbia Road in Dorchester...I have to say, i can rest easy now with the more accessible Singh's; it was head and shoulders above Ali's.

I wasn't content to try the Tremont St. Ali's because I had heard it wasn't as good, and one look at the greasy brown offerings confirmed the runours. But I figured at lunchtime on a Saturday, the Mattapan Ali's should shine. Eh. it WAS nice to have a choice of fried snapper instead of shrimp as the only fish option, but their veggies fell down on the job. Only watery, falling apart potatoes and cabbage, without very much in the way of seasonings. Their 'gravy" of onions and red peppers didn't add a whole lot. I had them hit it liberally with hot sauce, but it was fairly generic. Mediocre roti crepe.

Now, Singh's was a whole 'nother world...A chewy, tasty roti shell, shrimp that were sauteed in West Indian spices, choices of a half dozen vegetables that were each cooked and seasoned according to its needs. A home-made hot sauce that I could have eaten with a spoon. The Roti wars are over, all hail the victor!
