Ali Baba Report

After reading so many positive Chowhound reviews of Ali Baba on 34th Street for quite some time, I finally got around to trying it out on Christmas Eve.

When we got there, it seemed as though the place was packed. But they sat us immediately, which was great since we were going to see a movie at Kips Bay and we didn’t want to rush through dinner (we have a 1 year old and don’t get out alone that often!).

I think my husband was a little reluctant to try Ali Baba, since, admittedly, he can be somewhat of a picky eater (he doesn’t like things with a lot of sauces on them). But I kept reminding him that Chowhound never lets us down and he agreed that I was right. Plus, I figured that he could always fall back on the kabobs or grilled chicken if nothing else appealed to him.

After perusing the menu, we both had a hard time deciding what to get since so many things sounded delicious. We ended up with 2 appetizers – tarama and fried calamari. Both were really delicious. I’m not a huge fan of fried calamari, but these practically melted in your mouth.

For entrees, I had the Shrimp Casserole and my husband had the Sausage Pide. I thoroughly enjoyed my dish and I liked the pide as well, although I wasn’t crazy about the seasonings in the sausage (which is unusual since I love sausage). My husband LOVED his dish. We didn’t have dessert – in fact I don’t even think we discussed what they had for dessert because we were both so full.

My husband is now hooked on this place and on the way out he took a delivery menu (we live fairly close by) and he keeps talking about the pide!

We really look forward to going back to try other dishes and I was especially glad to read recently on this board that they are baby-friendly – a big plus for me now.

Thanks Chowhound!
