Ali Baba on 34th and 3rd

Finally ate at this Pizza/Turkish place. In the front, it looks exactly like the typical slice place, complete with extremely wan-looking pies with forlorn pieces of mushroom and pepperoni on top.

Fear not. Proceed to the back, and you are within the arms of a nice, simple, friendly Turkish restaurant. We tried the eggplant salad with excellent pide, the sigara borek (light and greaseless, beautifully fried), a delicate lahmacun (hard to believe the same person who made this flat bread was responsible for the pizza in front), a mild but flavorful chicken kebab, and a perfectly respectable iskender kebab (the doner here isn't as flavorful as I'd like, and the pide on the bottom was soggy, though). The service was wonderful and caring. Tab was under $40 for this feast.

This is a wonderful alternative to, say, the Waterfront or Le Giara if you are going to the new Sony Theater at Kips Bay.
