Alfanoose, which had been a fixture on Fulton St. until the post-9/11 downturn resulted in a financial squeeze for its hard-working owner, reopened on Maiden Lane, in the financial district, five months ago. I finally got a chance to return and received a warm welcome from the owner, who remembered me, asked about my children and asked whether tonight's takeout was going to Yankee Stadium (it was). His falafel, baba, foul and other treats rank among the best Middle Eastern in NY. Unfortunately, his sit-down restaurant was mostly empty. This is a small-time restaurant owner who deserves Chowhounds support. When in or around the financial district, consider a stop. Visiting Century 21? Attending the Tribeca Film Festival? J&R Music World? Ground Zero? Maiden Lane is centrally located.
