Alfanoose remains as good as it ever was, but the morale of its proprieter has plunged. I'm speaking of the guy who makes the sandwiches--the one to the right as you face the counter. His partner, the other guy, hasn't been around lately, leaving our man to toil essentially alone. Late one lunch run recently, he sort of broke down, saying he was "depressed" and "tired" and "not making enough money" and was considering closing shop.
That elicited a gasp from the 7-8 people waiting in line. Crises of "Don't close" and "we'll pay higher prices" rose up. But our man, while friendly and gentle-spirited as usual, didn't seem to take much comfort.
I spent a little more money than usual that day, and resolved to return more often. This really is a wonderful place, and the neighborhood would sustain a major loss if he closed.
So eat more falafel on Fulton St., just east of Broadway.
