Non-alcoholic Sonoma Sparkler

Sorry to report too late for tonight's celebrations, but I just bought this last night at the Long's Drugs in Healdsburg, CA. I'd tried the alcoholic cider last month, was impressed enough to buy the non-alky.

Sonoma Sparkler, 100% sparkling apple juice, made by Sonoma Cider Mill, 707-431-8938, $2.99/750ML.

Popping it open at lunchtime, as soon as I caught the first whiff of the delicate aromas I poured it out of my tumbler into a wine glass to evaluate it more carefully. It has really beautiful color, a pale straw, the same as a young blanc de blancs Champagne rather than the amber I was expecting and good clarity. Small bubbles, but not a long-lasting mousse. The aromas are incredible, very fine with floral highlights, more of fresh apples and not baked. The texture is very light with good crispness. It seems less sweet than the ubiquitous Martinelli, although the 140 calories per 8 oz. serving is the same. Good balance of acidity keeps it from being cloying and brightens up the fresh yellow/green apple flavors. This finishes with a clean crisp ending and leaves a fruity rather than sugary aftertaste. Very nice indeed.

About a buck more than the Martinelli, and well worth it.
