albondigas special at Rosa Mexicana...

Last year I made a special trip to Rosa Mexican during their ice cream fiesta. I went for lunch today and decided to try their $20.05 special. For starter I tried the chilled cauliflower soup with brown butter mango ice cream and ostria caviar - not bad, interesting, not revelatory but pleasent. For main - I had the albondigas wrapped in corn tortillas, cooked in a tomato-habanero sauce, sprinkled with raisins, almonds, creama and queso. The meatballs were a blend of veal, pork and beef. This dish was beautiful - the flavors were restrained - not over the top intense - but subtle so that the flavors came together and hovered, playing off each other (I know this sounds strange) - the flavor of the coorn tortillas came through, the sweet of the raisins, the crunch of the almonds, the light spiciness of the sauce, the meatballs providing the contrast deeper note - just wonderful. I was going to order the special ice creams in additon to what was offered on the $20.05 menu - which was a coconut flan with roasted pineappele - which was a perfect light ending. (I'm going back tomorrow just for ice cream). The specials are being offered until 06/26. The waiter mentioned that the albondigas recipe was inspired from Oaxaca.
