This Boston Chowhound and her mate spent this past weekend in Akron/Cleveland visiting his family. Arrived Fri night. Sat lunch was at BW3 in Medina - groan. Food was very forgettable - I won't even go into it. But we were able to catch the OSU-Michigan game on our way to Cleveland airport drop off family members. Service was typical Midwestern "sweet."

Poked around Cleveland afterwards and passed up some appealing places, like Lola and Greenwood Tavern in downtown; Prosperity Social Club and other really inviting places in the cool Tremont/Lincoln Park area. We settled on Great Lakes Brewing in Ohio City. We snagged two seats at the downstairs bar. It was really bustling and festive in there! Lovely setting and I found out later that they are trying to keep things on the eco tip which is great (which is not a common thing out there, according to the great bartender....non-styrofoam take-out containers, radiant heat fireplace). We started with the big, cushy pretzels which hit the spot ($9). Served with a couple of mustards, radishes, and a delicious dip (not sure what was in it). We split the (cut-and-pasted from the menu) Killbuck Valley Mushroom, garlic oil, locally grown mushrooms, fresh rosemary, mozzarella and blue cheeses ($11). Really nice with cornmeal on the crust. I could've used a few minutes more in the pizza oven, but I like some charring. Some fresh beers (Burning River and Commodore Perry IPA) and nice wines-by-the-glass rounded out the night. http://www.greatlakesbrewing.com/

Back to Akron...We spent a warm, sunny hour on Sunday at Angel Falls Coffee in Highland Square. Honestly, the coffee was mediocre (we had just been spoiled with Blue Bottle in San Fran the prior weekend) but the setting more than made up for it. We decompressed and read the Sunday NYT while sipping our coffees from the stuffed chairs in back.

We explored the Akron Art Museum (great little museum, BTW). With the games starting (Pats not until 415pm), we had to get ourselves to a sports pub. We checked out the Winking Lizard, which we know is a small chain in OH. Nothing to look at, but we got two seats at the bar. Dogfish Head 90 min on tap?! For $5 a pint?! WTF? 'nuff said. Some kind of grilled chicken, black beans/salsa/TexMex salad for B, a veggie/black bean burger which was actually tasty for me. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Akron.

Next time, we'll head back to Vegiterranean, which we enjoyed last year. Bar Cento and Bier Markt are also on our short list.
