Adventures in Pickling!

There's an excellent old post on this topic if you want to look for it here:

But, as the forum suggests, I'm starting a new thread, since that one's been inactive since December 2013.
=============================================================================================

Is there anything that CAN'T be pickled? It doesn't seem that there is. I've recently pickled two unusual things.

Asparagus - As I often do, I bought these without a clear idea of what to do with them. I didn't want to just do the same old thing with them, so I pickled them. Here's the excellent NYT Cooking recipe I used as a starting point:

https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1...

I added the optional ingredients, as well as fenugreek and Ras El Hanout, to give it a spectacular North African/Indian pop in every bite:

Then, things got really weird. I bought two star fruit, and I really, REALLY had no idea what to do with them. Star fruit are adorable when cut to show off their shape. I consider it a minor crime against nature to grind them up and use them the way mere mortal fruit are used. They're incredible as a dessert topping (Star Fruit Upside Down Cake, anyone?), but I wanted to try something...different. So, I made these:

With orange peel, cloves, cinnamon, and a bunch of sugar, they're much closer to the SWEET end of the spectrum than anything else I've picked before. But, the vinegar still gives it that distinctive...um...weirdness that makes it so interesting. And, look how cute they look dancing together on my plate! Sorry about the lighting...I took this picture at my desk at work. ;)
