Adding Rose Petals to a Cake

I'm making this cake over the weekend: http://www.saveur.com/semolina-coconu...

I'm going to skip the fresh rose petals, but I have some dried rose petals from my garden. If you have baked/garnished with dried rose petals before, can you offer some advice? I could always just toss some atop to make it pretty, but I am worried they may be unappetizing to eat. I am wondering if I should skip it entirely, bake into the cake (worried that might not work either), or possibly candy some citrus to top it and add the dried rose petals to that syrup to soften. Ideas?
