With time on my hands I've wanted to start/inspire a thread like this for a long time. Certain to be controversial but why not.

All are my recommendations for the Best:

Steak house: Prime Rib
Italian in the city: Laboratorio
Italian outside of the city: Maestro
French/Modern French: Citronelle
Maryland style seafood: Jerry's, Lanham, MD
Maryland crab cakes: Narrows, Kent Island, MD
Best crab cake, any style: Charleston, Baltimore
Greek seafood: The Black Pearl, Baltimore
Pizza, D. C.: Pizzaria Paradiso
Pizza, New York (authentic): Sylvano's, Herndon
Pizza, Local tradition: Ledo's ONLY (UNDERLINE) the original West Hyattsville location-NO OTHERS!
Tex Mex: Rio Grande, mulitple locations
Mexican: El Taqueria Charrito Caminante, Arlngton
(especially their Mexican cheesesteak on a roll)

Peruvian Chicken: El Pollo Rico, Arlington
French Fries: Thrasher's, Ocean City-original location
Frozen custard: Neilson's, Vienna
Ice Cream: Thomas Sweet, Georgetown
Indian: Heritage of India, Bethesda and Georgetown
Chicken kabobs: Moby Dick, multiple locations
Persian rice: Shamshiry, Tyson's Corner
Winery to visit in VA countryside: Barboursville, VA
Restaurant to visit in VA countryside: Four and
Twenty Blackbirds, Flint Hill, VA
Restaurant to visit in far MD suburbs: Le Mannequin
Pis, Olney (worth the drive from Reston)
Crab house: Stoney's, Broomes Island, MD
BBQ: Johnny Boy's, La Plata, MD (honorable mention:
at least a half dozen other open pit places in
Charles County that no one on this board ever
talks about).
Fried chicken: Crisfield's, Georgia Ave. & East West
Highway, Silver Spring (fried in black cast iron
skillet to order)
Most romantic: Old Angler's Inn, especially their
lounge on a winter's night; where you want to go
on a blind date if your date is truly ugly! It's
so dark no one will see them. If they're not ugly
and you want to return after marriage then you have
a memory!
Best tavern: Old Brogue, Great Falls, VA
Best wine list at reasonable markup: Prime Rib
Best restaurant for anniversary, under $200: Obelisk

Best restaurant to celebrate divorce: Prime Rib, at
the bar.

Best place to "wow" jaded European traveller: Maestro
Best place to blow diet: Laboratorio
Best Chinese: Tony Cheng's Szechuan at 615 I St., NW
which closed about 15 years ago. Even today
nothing has really taken it's place. (I hear
the arguments coming!)(His restaurant on H Street
is a pale imitation.)
Best Thai: Duangrat's (But I haven't been in two
Best wine store: Calvert Woodley (or Total w/ $50 off
Best place to take a group of 10 or more: Zaytinya

California for In 'n Out Burger which is 1/2 mile
from LAX. (Order 4 X 4 w/ grilled onions)
Best Hamburger this side of California: Charcoal Pit,
on route 202 in Wilmington, DE but ONLY this loca-
tion; order 1/2 pound rare or medium rare. Far
sperior to Five Guys, Clyde's, Houston's, etc.
Best restaurant for Valentine's Day when everything else is booked up and you are just praying to find something more than decent that might have a table:
Taberna del Alabardero on 18th Street. You won't
be disappointed.
Best restaurant to feel like you are in Paris when you
are not (and hardly ever mentioned on Chowhound):
