I'm a big fan of Abbondanza's in the West Village ( Bleecker St. btw 6th av/Macdougal). They have a Tuscan wood-fired oven and have great success with roasting various hunks of meat therein (Pastrami, pork loin, meatloaf, etc). Sandwiches that would serve two, to die for. They also serve good calimari (fried), decent pizza, and good 'you pick the ingredients' salads, which are best when utilizing some of the afore-mentioned meat (though I'm content to let Steve or Scott, the owners, pick out ingredients for the salad - they're damn good at it).
