Aaya - Modern Japanese - Brewer Street, London

Went at lunchtime today. Ate king crab with ponzu jelly (£9.50), scallop and shiso tempura (£7) and a piece of sea urchin nigiri (£5). Everything delicious and using top quality ingredients. King crab dish was my favourite, the flesh had been removed and was served in part of the shell topped with the jelly and some wakame, quite a generous sized serving. Tempura batter was light, crisp and oil free, good deep fry technique at work in the kitchen. Sea urchin is from California (hard to find in London, only other place I know of is Saki) which means sweet and creamy, much better than the saltier, more bitter Canadian sea urchin found in quite a few other London sushi bars. Most nigiri priced at £2.50 - £3 per piece, sea urchin is the most expensive item on the sushi menu.

Not an extensive menu but some other interesting options to explore on future visits, I would classify it as part modern izakaya part sushi bar. Spoke to the restaurant manager, all the chefs are Japanese trained in Japan which comes as no surprise based upon the quality I sampled.

Surprisingly underhyped considering that the man behind the venture is Gary Yau, Alan's brother.
