A16, why all the hype?

Stacey | May 1, 200403:34 PM

I went to A16 last night for a friend's birthday. It was incredibly crowded. The decor was pretty nice, but we had a 9 PM reservation and weren't seated until almost 10. After being seated we had two bottles of wine that the waitress recommended that were on the verge of being undrinkable.

The meals were less than average to mediocre. I had the asparagus which was the best part of my meal, despite several stringy pieces. My boyfriend had the pizza margherita which was pretty good, good sauce, nice cheese, but the crust was burned in several places and not one person at our table finished their crust. It was a unique type of pizza for SF, but wasn't enough to make me return (mostly because of the crust). My main course was the halibut and I only had two bites. It didn't look that good, but looked better than it tasted. I thought the halibut was spoiled because it was so fishy. I told the waitress it was almost inedible, and it was only then that she told me that it had anchovies in it (which was not mentioned on the menu). Someone else at the table did not eat more than 3 bites of the halibut. My boyfriend had the chicken, which was pretty good though mostly dark meat. Desserts were unmemorable, and nobody at our table really finished it.

After eating there I was extremely disappointed because I had heard such great things and really anticipated my meal there. I would not go back nor would I recommend it.
