9th Ave Festival

Ira Kaplan | May 20, 2002 01:49 PM

I'm soliciting opinions of last weekend's 9th Ave. Food Festival. What did you like? What were you disappointed in? What surprised you? For me, the highlight were the pupusas I was served by a couple of nice ladies. I can't remember where the stand was located, except that it was on the west side of the street, but I'm guessing it was between maybe 46th and 50th. The pupusas were thick tortillas filled with meat and topped with cabbage, pickled onions and a hot sauce. The cold, crispy cabbage and onions played perfectly off the soft, warm tortillas. There were two disappointments: The boiled shrimp at the seafood stand at 38th looked great, but were dry and tasteless, and the cake at The Little Pie Shop stand tasted as if it had been made three days ago. I guess that's what I get for ordering cake at a place with "pie" in the name.
