Tried 96 Union a couple of weeks ago, and wasn't impressed. The kitchen was putting out quality product - not raveworthy, but nice enough - and the service was crisp. But there's something wrong with the atmosphere, something that I can't quite name, that makes the place uncomfortable.
It could have been the background music, which a peeve of mine: present, a tiny bit tacky (canned "smoov" jazz) and a little too loud. But I can't be the only person who finds the place uncomfortable, for the dining room was nearly empty, a state which our waiter identified as status-quo for the place. (Indeed, our waiter later admitted that he was moving on to higher-traffic climes, seeking an environment where he'd stay busy. An idle server is a hungry server.)
There is a fairly frisky bar business on the deck in afternoons and early evenings; however, those bar tabs are never moving into the main restaurant. How long can 96 Union last?
