I was driving on 9 Mile in Fabulous Ferndale today and my steering wheel tugged me into 8 (degrees) Plato Beer store (“store” is the wrong word). Thankfully, DTWers now usually needn’t drive far to buy six packs of Michigan artisan microbrews. Given, then, that MI craft microbrews are my favorite thing about 8* Plato, I guess I shouldn’t get too excited about the place, ‘cause I can get what I need in Troy.
While 8* Plato also advertises “cheeses, chocolate, charcuterie,” etc., they don’t seem to have too much other than beer at this juncture. Maybe I have tunnel vision?
So, I can just say the following:
If you live near 9 Mile and Livernois, you should go to 8* Plato. If you don’t live near there but also somehow don’t live near a good beer “salon,” then you should go to 8* Plato. If you don’t care about distance and like to deal with very knowledgeable and nice people, then you should go to 8* Plato. Finally, I’ll comment that they supposedly have big beer tasting events every Friday eve from 6pm to 8pm. That’s what is going to get me back there!
Today I got a couple of their nice bottle conditioned ales made my Dexter, Michigan’s Jolly Pumpkin brewery. I subconsciously shy away from Jolly Pumpkin product because I worry it will taste of pumpkin pie spice… But, no, that just is the name of the brewery. The beer turned out to be wonderful. I had the Dark Farmhouse Ale, recommended to me by 8* Plato’s proprieter, Tim (based on my personal taste criteria---it may not be a favorite of Tim).
PS—they have lots of “fancy” Belgian/Euro imported beers, but I’m a Michigan guy, so this doesn’t make my Reasons-to-Visit list, above.
