71 Clinton Fresh Food - my two cents

Just went to 71 Clinton Fresh Food last night with the fiancée. The food was definitely creative, well-crafted, and full of diverse flavors which came together beautifully on the palate. I had the cod as my entree, and my fiancée had the scallops. We shared the gnocchi and soup as an appetizer. All were artfully prepared and presented.

Now, here's why I'll probably not go back,

1. Service was terrible - what really put us off was the waiter's crude approach to suggestive selling. We originally ordered only one appetizer to share (gnocchi), but the waiter kept cajoling us to order more, saying that we should try another one of the appetizers that earned them "great reviews in Zagat." When I relented somewhat and ask for a suggestion, he says dismissively, "Oh, just pick anything." Excuse me? I don't think that I have ever seen anyone so flagrantly attempt to pump the bill, save for maybe McDonalds.

2. Portions are small and the prices high. Most entrees are in the 20s and are very small. My entree looked to be the size of a large appetizer and the appetizers were about. As well-prepared as everything was, it just wasn't worth the $$$.

3. The space is small and the seating awkward. You sit about 1 foot away from your neighbors. It was tough to have a normal conversation.

Of course, I am happy that I tried it. However, I could not help but think that we would have had a much better time going to back to Lupa for the umpteenth time :)
