I hate to do a post like this, but I'm looking for some North End help here, please. I'm seeking a good restaurant for a special 70th birthday dinner for a good friend's mom (and 6 other guests). The catch is, they are Italian American from Providence, so they would ideally prefer a good red sauce kind of place as opposed to more nouveau Italio-fusion or trendy kind of places. OR, they could do a trendy place as long as it had some traditional standards for the less chowishly adventurous.
They were originally looking at Mamma Maria, since it's supposedly reliable, but I assured them that chowhounds could recommend a better place for them rather than MM's very high prices (although the family is willing to drop some cash on a great meal. It IS mama, after all).
What do you guys think? What about Dom's? They would love some special attention from a paesan, I'm sure.
Any ideas would be great. We'll be going to the NEnd this weekend to check out the menus of any contenders.
