7 ways to attract BOH staff in British Columbia!

ChefMikeinBurlington | May 2, 201810:12 AM     7

So a friend of mine in Surry sent me this, he gets the BC Restaurant & Food Services Association (BCRFA) newsletter. Like everyplace out there ( and here!), they are 3-4 cooks short and looking to hire, but how to hire them you ask??

Here' the BCRFA's top 7 ways to get new staff!!!

Did anyone else miss the "pay a living hourly wage so they are not in poverty" idea?

I know I bang the drum for BOH money as loud as I can, but none of these 7 points, not one, addresses the basic fundamental point that nothing else matters if you can't make your rent!

Work/life balance means ZILCH if you have a 2 hour commute each way on top of a 10 hour shift.

"Being an Influencer", sounds like great fun, I'm sure every chef loves the ideas of "influencing" their 4 roommates at 34 years old.

"Changing systems" is a wonderful idea, except that the one system not changed are 14 hour shifts and unpaid overtime.

"Knowing your Staff" sounds brilliant, and "in the Metro Vancouver area, operators need to be aware of employees’ housing and transportation needs....as well as being aware, maybe, just maybe pay them enough to live a bit closer, or pay their transit pass, or taxi chits, or employee coach lines...

Generation Y and Z employees have far more employment options and truly don't a shit about the "when I was your age" stories. There is "no nobility in suffering" and if they can get $16/ph at Costco or Rona or Loblaws and not get burned, cut or scalded, why even consider it??

Everyday the staffing challenge only gets greater, and the BCRFA has done its members a significant disservice by ignoring the elephant in the room...
