631 opened in one of those locations that just does not seem to work for a restaurant even though across the road there is a popular successful place and it is very convenient.
The last resident was JD's Steakhouse, before that an Italian place and before that a New Orleans Cajun place that we loved. Each one of them lasted about one year.
631 is run by a family that has a successful diner (Bel Aire) in LIC.
It is unique for the Southold area since they open at 6 AM and close at 2 AM. Sort of like a diner but the very friendly owner insists "it's not a diner!"
We called our adventurous foodie neighbors and decided to head out there for an early dinner.
It's a very nice space with a bar area and outdoor tables too. Complimentary wine and beer since they are waiting on their liquor license.
Excellent and friendly service which was a surprise since they have only been open 4 days.
We ordered some apps that were excellent, perfectly cooked and seasoned grilled octopus, tasty fresh spinach pie and fried calamari. All excellent!!
For entrees I had an excellent bacon cheese burger, lovely wife had a very tasty, juicy Philly Cheese steak. One friend ordered a BLAT (Bacon lettuce Avocado and tomato) which was very good with a nice portion of bacon but no mayo on the sammich or on the side. The server quickly brought over some mayo.
The only disappointment was the souvlaki sammich which lacked spice and the usual sautéed onions and tomato. Odd for the Greeks to drop the ball on a Greek staple.
Overall, very good. The 2 AM closing time is unique. I hope they can breathe life into this location.
