6 Thumbs Up for Mochica (long-ish)

We finally went to Mochica for dinner tonight after hearing so many good things over the past few months. In a word -- excellent.

A little dish of fried garbanzo beans tossed with chopped tomato, red onion, and cilantro arrived when we were looking over the menus, and after 2 bites I declared myself an addict. When I mentioned to our server how great they were, he gladly refilled the dish with another generous mound.

The 3 of us then had the following:

Appies -- We split the anticuchos (the beef heart version) and tequenos (fried shrimp/mozarella "won tons".) The anticuchos were presented as 2 perfectly cooked skewers, each containing 3 generous pieces of beef heart. The "won tons" were actually more like little egg rolls, also perfectly cooked and dusted with sugar. The tequenos weren't really up my alley but my husband and friend loved them. In exchange, I ate some extra beef heart... :-)

Entrees -- I had the calamares rellenos (grilled squid bodies stuffed with chorizo, one skewer of 4 large pieces) which was extremely tasty although very rich, but the bed of baby greens and boiled potato cubes dressed with a lemon vinaigrette was a pleasantly light contrast. Hubby had the chuleta de chancho (dijon pork chop) which he really enjoyed, but couldn't stop raving about the garlic mashed potatoes that acompanied it. Friend had the lomo saltado and said it was one of the best renditions ever, perfect balance between pieces of steak, veggies and fries. A scoop of fluffy white rice is served on the side. The portions were all extremely generous as we were completely stuffed after the split appetizers and our entrees. We didn't look at the dessert menu so I can't comment on that, sorry.

There were only 2 other tables there when we arrived at about 9pm. I realize that although it is a Saturday night, it's sort of an atypical weekend evening due to the holiday. I really hope more people will go there and keep the place alive -- it really is a gem and deserves all the attention it can get.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and can't wait to return to try the rest of the menu, especially the ceviches (just wasn't in the mood for ceviche tonight for some inexplicable reason.) Total bill for 2 appies, 3 entrees, 2 beers (Cristal and Pilsen) + a 22% tip was $95.
