50 Carmine -- report

Ate at 50 Carmine last night. Was excited about the meal, particularly after reading an earlier post that said fans of Al Di La (which is phenomenal) will like it. Unfortunately, dinner at 50 Carmine fell far short of Al Di La, and it was a major letdown.

We shared the mussels appetizer. It was heavy on wine and water, low on taste. I ordered the lasagna (after failing to get any sort of helpful information as to the nature of the pasta with many cheeses) -- and though the presentation was nice, the dish was, well, wet. Maybe they forgot to drain the pasta. And the meat in the lasagna resembled the meat found in a Taco Bell meat taco. My two dinner companions got the pasta with sausage and broccoli rabe (mediocre -- the sausage was way, way too salty) and the gnocchi (which was the clear winner out of the three, but sadly not big enough for all three of us to share).

The staff was friendly, if unhelpful and unknowledgeable. And the two huge coat racks out in the open don't help the ambience. But it's a pretty space -- I wish the food did the comfy atmosphere more justice.
