50 carmine

Had dinner last night at the new tour of duty for chef sarah jenkins - 50 carmine located at....guess. It was her food alright, italian mixed with current greenmarket finds and often an added twist. I had wilted escarole in a warm anchovy dressing with crunchy, anchovy soaked croutons - excellent, followed by sauteed skate wings with greens over smashed potatoes. Quite simple, not defiantly unusual but so fresh, well cooked and satisfying. My dining companion had an assortment of appetizers including a really good rucola salad with pomegranate and then mussels that were in a broth I could bathe in - so addictive but can't recall the unusual spicing this morning. Bless the delicious bread to soak it up with.

The wine list is a little over the top price wise though there are a couple of italian choices for 30 and several shiraz for the same - otherwise we venture into upwards of 50 and on into the 200's. Odd since the average antipasto is about 6-12$ and the pastas are about 12-16$, entrees in the 20$ range.

Simple decor, kind of moody with votive candles on the walls, white tablecloths, some tables for two a bit cramped but thankfully not so noisy.

Tables on either side of us had ordered spaghetti in a red wine clam sauce and I noticed both left much of the pasta on their plates. The diners to my right thought it was a bit heavy and odd. Maybe some kinks still to be worked out, definitely some service kinks need more than a steam iron but nice to have ms jenkins back again...
