4Soul Bakery, Joliet/Shorewood---Romanian

The name looks like it's from the artist formerly known as P., but the proprietors of this week-old bakery are from Transylvania (and thus speak Romanian and Hungarian). 4Soul is small; late today its cases held about a dozen different pastries. Strawberry jam seems a prevalent filling, but there was also a pineapple confection. Two breads available were white and poppy seed with cocoa. I bought just two items; both were good: a "Romanian cookie," an inch-tall disk of dense yellow cake filled with strawberry jam and topped with powdered sugar, and a "vanilla cream," a multi-layered square of flaky pastry filled with what my father-in-law would call "puddin'".

The young woman behind the counter gave me a plump button of dry dough containing a small amount of feta and another type of cheese. These are 5 for $1. She explained with what seemed to be national pride that these are to be eaten "before drinking."
