B-44 - what happened?

Mari | Jul 29, 200511:46 AM

I remember B-44 was great when it first opened. I was there last about 5 years ago and remember that I enjoyed my meal. ...ok - 5 years is a long time I guess. However, my meal last night was mediocre and I was so disappointed.

We started with the cod cheeks, which are prepared with garlic and chili flakes. They were not any better than what I had at Thirsty Bear in December and arrived a tad too salty for my taste. It seemed that they had a thickening agent in them since the sauce covering the cod was a tad thick. The piquillo peppers stuffed with crab were ok - a bit boring and lukewarm.

We also ordered the chipirrones en su tinta (squid stuffed with sausage presented in a squid ink sauce). The chipirrones were decent, again nothing spectacular. The best dish was the special salad of heirloom tomatoes with crumbled goat cheese. The meal came to about $65 with 2 drinks.

I have to say I really liked Thirsty Bear when it first opened, but it did go downhill for a bit. However, my lunch in December was quite good now that I compare it to B44. We ordered a lot of tapas since it was a company lunch and we shared almost everything on the menu. I guess it's time to go back and compare their tapas to B-44's.
