We just had a quite disappointing dinner at 40 West. first off the physical layout of the place is pretty strange, most of the seating is up a steep and narrow flight of stairs. This must be a hellish place to work as the food had to be carried up the stairs. Today was very hot and the AC was barely keeping up with the heat. I started with a Ceaser salad that was awful, the dressing tasted like mayonaise, no sense of anchovies and not enough garlic. The cheese was a cutesy melted criss cross laid on top of the greens, I really didn't see the point of that, it wouldn't blend with the salad and I wound up picking it apart with my hands.
For an entree I had the mint crusted shrimp in curry sauce. This was $22 for 6 medium large shrimp, I didn't notice any mint crusting. The curry sauce was tasty enough with a coconut milk base but there was no rice at all served with it.
One of the deserts was sent back by our friends, It was supposed to be pear ginger sorbet but the only flavor was an overbearing peppery ginger. Tasted more like Jamaican ginger beer than anything else.
The service was a little spotty but it was the waiter's first night and he certainly was trying, just didn't have it together yet. I think all in all this place is just too frou frou for me. I wouldn't be surprised if Terrapin puts a serious dent in their business. We would have gone to Terrapin but weren't sure it was open yet, on the way out of town we saw that it was rocking. Oh well,....
