old (30-40+ years) LA restaurants

I've got a friend coming to town who wants to eat at an old LA restaurant. I have never thought about food in this way and could desperately use some help. The only place I can think of that would fit that kind of bill would be musso & frank's, and the place didn't thrill me in any way when i ate there once. (felt like customers were divided into regulars/ celebs and tourists, which is certainly fair enough, but the quality of the food couldn't overcome even this minor unpleasantness, though the cocktails helped!)

Anyway, I know the formosa is old but havent ever eaten there and have heard murmurings of nothing special about it, but that kind of ambience is a bonus.

i'm thinking of tam oshanters just cuz i like the place but i've always only eaten sandwiches in the bar.

What are the old la restaurants (30-40+ years old) that i'm ignorant of?
