A 24hr diner with a chowworthy dish

So, I had a very early morning meeting today and needed to meet at a 24hr diner (meeting was at 6).

We met at Granny's on Diversey (Granny's Waffle & Pancake 501 W Diversey)). Since I got there first, and discovered I would have quite a wait until our meeting as work interupted it, I finally had a chance to order Granny's speciality.

Most of the menu and food at Granny's is typical diner food. Decent omlettes with a wide range of ingrediant options, eggs, steak, sandwiches etc.

However, they have a small section of baked pancakes which take 45 minutes to make.

I ordered the apple.

Sure enough, 45 minutes later out came a plate filling 4+ inch high puffed, carmelizing baked pancake apple and cinnimon wonder.

Very, very rich and very good. Amazing as a breakfast, would make an incrediable dessert. The pancake is on the inside like a perfect custard, the apples have a carmelized outside and were warm and tasty in the middle.

My suggestion - go with a group order one or more of the baked pancakes, get some coffee, fresh squeezed OJ, and perhaps some meat and eggs to share as you wait on breakfast perfection.

This raises the question, are there other otherwise typical places around the city with that "special" dish which they make with care from scratch? Granny's certainly has now lept to the top of my 24hr diner list on the basis of this one set of dishes.
