2019 Tokyo Food Crawl – Day 6 Lunch: "AKANOREN" – Ramen

Charles Yu | Mar 10, 201907:11 PM

With another calorie laden meal awaiting us in the wing tonight. Before our half day tour of the Digital Interactive Art Exhibit in the Mori Building, we decided to just have a simple lunch of Ramen to tie us over.

In the past, when I visited Tokyo. For my ramen-fix, based on convenience, I usually just head up to ‘Ichiran’ in Roppongi to try out a bowl of their consistently decent noodles. Otherwise, another destination of choice was the numerous number of stalls in the Ramen alley beneath Tokyo Station. However, the outcome of such trial-and-error eating often resulted in some hits and misses.

This time, my friend would like me to try a long standing, historical ramen place in his neighborhood of Azabujuban. This place is a favorite ramen hang-out for a number of his foodie friends and is way less commercialized than ‘Ichiran’. It also has a much higher tabelog rating.

I chose a regular bowl of ‘al-cheapo’ Tonkotsu with all the trimmings and also tried out a couple of morsels from my friend’s Goyza order. The Goyza was very good, the skin velvety smooth and the filling light and delectable. My bowl of Ramen was definitely a winner! The texture of the thin noodles perfectly al-dente. The creamy broth was flavorful and lusciously rich. The nicely cooked Char-siu roasted pork was delicious and slightly chewy, just to my liking. Based on my recollection, ‘Akanoren’ product is definitely head and shoulder better than the now, overly diversified and commercialized ‘Ichiran‘……and ‘Akanoren’ is not even in the Top 10 of go-to Ramen places in Tokyo! Wow!!

Now, I am curious to find out what the products in some of those Top 10, requiring hour long wait, Ramen temples really taste like?!
