2 guys, dinner and wine in Portland

Jordan | Oct 5, 200511:17 PM     15

Here is a very particular request: A good regular place for two married guys with kids who go out to dinner to enjoy a moment of good friendship. One of us is vegetarian and we are looking for a good wine menu. It is hard to articulate the perfect place, but it is not trendy, but not just a local eatery; it is comfortable, but not quiet; the food is good quality and consistent, but not nuevo.

The Portland restaurant that use to fit this description was the bistro spin off, Buckman's Grille, next to Williams on 12th, that closed down. It hit all the right notes for two guys who want a regular place for dinner; discrete, quiet, hip, friendly, good service and good food with no pretension. I am from Brooklyn which is full of places like this that survive forever on regulars who came from in and out of the neighborhood, who appreciate good food and willing to pay a few dollars more for it, and who do not care for license plates on the walls, fusion food or a DJ.

Any suggestions?
