2 clueless Brooklynites in LA - in need of cheap & fun eats

I realize this comes off as annoying, and I will do SOME research on this here board, I promise... but if anyone should feel tolerant, your suggestions would be really appreciated.

So, here's the story. We're coming to LA for a friend's wedding and thought it would be fun just to tool around in a rented car for a few days. We don't have much of an agenda, other than attending said wedding and celebrating 1 birthday (mine) - and I'd love to do it in a sort of cheapish but fun seafood place somewhere near a beach. Does something like that even exist in LA/Santa Monica?

We would also love to eat anything that's hard to come by in NYC - i.e., good Mexican food. Or whatever other good food you have "down there"! We are blowing most of our cash on staying at the Standard (don't ask - had to do it), so the cheaper the better.

We'll be heading out to Joshua Tree park for a couple days, too - yes I know it'll be hot but I've never seen the desert - ANY desert. Any tips in that area are welcome, too.

THANKS!!!
