1st time cooking duck

I'm making some sort of roast duck for my boyfriend and I on New Year's Eve. I'm leaning towards the Amanda Hesser recipe which looks great. YOu simmer it the day before and then roast it with soy, sugar, and sherry the following day. Has anyone tried this method or have another one that works well? Also, what sides do you like?
