15th off Broadway, downtown Oakland

I was scoping out another Shanghainese restaurant in Oakland last night (separate post), and turned the corner onto 15th between Franklin and Broadway and spied a couple of interesting looking places I wonder if our intrepid downtown Oakland hounds have scoped out.

One was called Poppa's Soul Food on the awning (but something like The Bootstrapper on the window). I didn't go in, but the "specials" on the window looked very traditional and fairly reasonable (most were around $6.50 for things like smothered pork chops with sides).

The other was called Hawaiian Walk-In Restaurant -- I poked my head in and it smelled delicious (disclaimer: I was *very* hungry). Loco Moco, Saimin, teriyaki combo plates -- all quite cheap.

What's the word -- should I have ditched the XLB quest and tried one of these?
