13 NIGHTS IN MAUI

Janice Mercer | Dec 21, 2004 11:50 PM

Stayed in a condo in North Kaanapali but ate at restaurants a number of times. My thoughts.

MAUI TACOS AT NAPILI PLAZA
Counter staff very disinterested and sullen. Fish tacos were tasteless and boring. Supposed fresh salsa bar looked very aged and messy. Would never return ...EVER.

HULA GRILL/LEILANI'S
Both okay. Nothing special except for the location ... right on the beach.

GRAND WAILEA
Had what were billed as nachos at their pool bar/restaurant. What they called cheese was actually some sort of white sauce with a pale cheese colour. Eeeeeww ... and for $10 to boot.

HYATT REGENCY SWAN COURT BREAKFAST BUFFET
This was $26 per person. Don't know why I even had it as I cannot eat enough food to possibly get close to $26 worth. I suppose it was a pleasant place to eat visually. Lots of birds flying about and landing on nearby plates. Bad news ... this is the only restaurant that I saw a cockroach in (and a big one at that). It scuttled across the floor in the buffet room ... yikes ...

ROY'S IN KAHANA
Husband and I both ended up spending some time in the bathroom at the condo after this dining experience. I had a "hearts of romaine caesar salad with blue cheese and bacon". However it had a large pile of mandoline paper thin sliced red onion on top (a lot) and maybe it was that that upset my stomach. I had the pot stickers as my entree. Pretty boring stuff. Husband had sea bass in a kind of asian inspired soya broth affair. Found the wait staff (mostly young 20 something guys) to be a little much with the "upsell" and the final reminder upon presentation of the bill of all the different cities in the US that have Roy's - yeah, thanks.

BREAKFAST AT THE TERRACE ROOM AT RITZ CARLTON
$14 omlete ... it was good though. Good service. Lots of birdies flying about and landing everywhere. Best part however was leaving the restaurant and walking down to the pool area and spending from 11:00 to 3:00 laying in the sun. Fabulous. Great pool and lounge chairs. Nice pool staff ... totally unpretentious. Not a busy time of year I guess (week before Christmas). They may not have been so lenient with non-guests using the pool if it were a busy time I figure.

HECOCK'S IN LAHAINA
Went here specifically to watch the Feast at Lele from the open air restaurant of Hecock's. We had $19.95 lobster. Not the best lobster I ever had but pretty good mai tai's and coconut shrimp appetizer. The luau show was pretty good too ... didn't stay for the whole show but our waiter at Hecock's told us we certainly could if we wanted to ... nice of him.

SANSEI IN KAPALUA SHOPS
My favourite of all. We ate here twice. Sat at the drinks bar the first time and right away met a nice couple and chatted and enjoyed our menu choices (the ones marked with butterflys or lobsters are their signature dishes and very good). Very friendly bar girl. Second time we were in the dining room and the food was just as good but more fun to be had at the bar.

COOL CAT CAFE IN LAHAINA
Good hamburger ... I had "The Leader of the Pack". Onion rings kinda greasy. Lousy mango margarita.

GENERAL THOUGHTS
Didn't get to Mama's Fish House or Spago. Felt I already had spent enough on meals out.

Did buy fresh fish from the fish market in Honokowai where our condo was. Very good. They prep it for you (I had the macadamia/panko coating on tuna) and give it to you in a pan to put in your oven.

Managed to finally find some Hangar One vodka ... on Maui no less!! Got the raspberry infused one. Haven't make myself a drink with it yet but I'm working on it ... have to find the right drink recipe. Can't be wasting it at US$38 a crack.
