120 Ocean Place is a fancy seafood spot in Wheaton, which I have been to a few times. It is in an old funeral home that looks like a church on the inside. Gets pretty crowded, and noisy. Service is a but brusque at times, but the seafood is usually quite good.
Went early a couple of Sundays ago, and the meal in general seemed less wonderful than in the past. It had been a heavy chow weekend and I was only there because someone really wanted to buy me dinner (I feel your sympathy), so it might have been me, because nothing on the menu seemed very exciting. I had blackened char for the main course, which was decent. As an aside, when did "blackened" come to mean pan cooking until slighlty charred over high heat, separate from the cajun, highly seasoned aspect? Anyway, it was good enough, though Paul Prudhomme would not have recognized it as blackened, and it could have used a little more heat.
But dessert was fabulous - sherry poached figs, served with the poaching liquor (not in the sense of alcohol) in a bowl over vanilla ice cream - it really was a cold fig soup. The sherry flavor was only the merest hint to highlight the essence of fig. A transporting experience. I noticed a flyer in the window promoting some sort of event with the pastry chef, whose name I did not record, but this person is doing some good work!
