Jardinière - A very urbane, elegant, formal and expensive Cal/French bastion just across the street from the Opera House and Davies Symphony Hall. One dish I had here (Sautéed scallops on truffled mashed potatoes) may be the single best thing I have ever eaten in a restaurant. The decor is playful (champagne bubbles over the bar) but still upscale. Service is helpful, but correct. Recommended.

Kate’s Kitchen - If Rainbow Grocery had a restaurant it would be just like Kate's Kitchen, but without the breakfast meat. It has the murals and granola as well as fruit plates and interesting combinations like cornmeal buttermilk pancakes. Portions are large, and, on weekends, the line in front of the lower Haight location is a long one. Cash only. Recommended.

Kyo-ya - Ikebana on perfect black lacquered table; sushi like butter. Grated wasabi, Formal Kaiseki Banquet; cherry blossom food. Bring money. Highly recommended.
