In culling my book collection, I came across "Restaurants of San Francisco by Patricia Unterman & Stan Sesser that was published in 1981 (which I've decided to keep). I'm looking at it in a new light.
Her 1981 Top 10 Very Best Restaurants List is:
Chez Panisse (1517 Shattuck, Berkeley) Still Kicking!
Ernie's (847 Montgomery) Gone
Gaylord (Ghiradelli Square) Still open, but any word on the quality?
Khan Toke (5937 Geary) Still Kicking!
Maurice et Charles (901 Lincoln, San Rafael) Gone
Miramonte (1327 Railroad Ave. St. Helena) Gone
Modesto Lanzone's (900 Northpoint)Gone
La Mirabelle (1326 Powell) Gone
Greens (Fort Mason) Its had its ups and downs, but its doing well these days.
Akasaka (466 Bush) Gone (although there is one in Menlo Park)
So out of 10, 4 are still open.
I'm definitely going to enjoy re-reading this book. I'll get to reminise about old now shuttered classics and get insight into places still open.
Her review of Hayes Street Grill states "My only quarrel involves some of their sauces which are too routine and too heavy" - guess she didn't own the joint back then.
Her review of Mama's on Washington Square refers to it as being the first of a chain and there being an Mama's in Macy's Basement. Hmmm, wonder what happened? The original Mama's is great.
