1 LA dinner--fantastic food, dining alone, water view?

Hi all,

I've only been to LA a couple of times and then only briefly. I'm coming in for a few nights but have only one night to myself, and am looking for a recommendation for where to eat that night.

Price is no object, but I also don't *need* it to be fancy. Mainly, I'd like some place where:

1. The food, of whatever kind, is amazing
2. I can look at the ocean
3. I can make a long, delicious evening of it, whether because it's a fancy dinner where I'm paying for multiple courses, or because it's the kind of place where you're allowed to sit and enjoy a languorous evening over a bottle of wine or whatever.

I am very open about about cuisine, except that I am allergic to shellfish and don't like sushi. French, Malaysian, Ethiopian, Israeli, Canadian, New American, I'm totally open. I love strong flavors, authentic preparations, basically chow in all its forms.

I'm going to be dining alone. I do this a lot, and generally don't need to ask for places where I'll feel "comfortable", because most places will now accommodate solo diners. But a place that will be really packed and buzzing on a Thursday night is probably not right.

I'm staying in downtown LA, but am fine with anywhere in cab distance.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!!
