1/2 cup cheddar, grated - how many ounces?

fldhkybnva | Nov 21, 201310:04 PM     14

I use cheese all the time and can't believe I don't know this but I guess then again I rarely follow recipes which specify amounts. To me 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, grated is different than 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese - the former being a weight measurement of 4 oz block cheese which is then grated to probably total more than 1/2 cup volume and the latter being enough cheese to fill a 1/2 cup volume. Is there a standard here? My general sense is 1/2 cup grated of cheeses like cheddar, Swiss, etc is usually 2 oz or so by weight. So the difference is nearly half. Any clarification? This is for a holiday recipe which just specifies "1/2 cup cheddar cheese, grated."
