Best/Worst Produce Giants

There's a certain fascination about going over to "Circus Fruit"(Ft. Hamilton Parkway @ 60th St.), Three Guys, and other megamarkets, especially in the wee hours...huge displays of heavily-advertised bargain fruits & veggies.

I wonder what would possess anyone to buy yellowed cukes, shriveled melons, moldy berries AT ANY PRICE!

Of course, behind the green door lies a First-Class cabin with items at prices more than reasonable when compared to "Garden-of-Eden"...

While elder-produce isn't necessarily the norm, can anyone tell me if there's a best time/worst time/best days/worst days/BEST PLACES IN BROOKLYN to find consistently fresh sale-priced merchandise at these "farmstand"-type places?
