there's this new dive la canita on 739 main st. in poughkeepsie. i've been there twice, and it's interesting...and hoping for someone else's help.
i'm no expert on authentic mexican - my favorite stuff is the nuevo latino, and i've only had different / good tasting mexican in san diego...but i'm thinking this is an oaxacan style place?
menu? we don't need no stinkin' menu - well, not in english, anyhow. their 'menu' is the size of a small notepad, and is tacos (chorizo / cabeza / barbacoa / lengua / cecina / carnitas / tasajo / suadero / dorados) at $1 each, tortas (quesillo / milanesa / carne enchilada / cubanas / jamon) at various prices. also, tostadas ,tlayudas, quesadillas, popusas, and burritos.
this time, i got 2 chorizo tacos and a chicken tostada ($2, i believe?). it seems to be a family working there, some of whom can speak english. the stove looks to be 30 years old. the grill area is a small grill, kept moderately clean.
the tacos were made by cooking the (soft) taco on the grill, throwing some chorizo on it, taking them off, then adding some onions and lettuce to it. the tostada was made by spreading some brown sauce on there (a bean sauce without the bean? a mole? i'm not sure), then some chicken, lettuce, cheese?, onions, tomatoes, a freshly-sliced avocado...and they included with it two sauces, one a green sauce (mild) and one a red sauce (hot!).
i'm hoping someone else tries this place out. i like it (especially for the price!) but want to get someone else's opinion.
