' Kangsu Chekiang & Shanghai Residents (HK) Association - Offering may be Hong Kong's Best Shanghainese food, even the starred establisments!

Charles Yu | Mar 17, 201610:39 AM

My favorite go-to place in Hong Kong, for delicious Shanghainese fare used to be Central's ' Shanghai Fraternity Association '...until I had my first meal here in KCSRA at its re-vamped location.

Rarely do I find such a capable kitchen, churning out plates after plates of near flawless dishes. It has been a while since I encountered dishes, so good and impressive, that it drew a noticeable 'Wow' from me! Casing point, that amazingly seasoned, crispy exterior yet moist interior Shanghainese Smoked Fish! Even my wife, a Shanghainese who has eaten quite a few great Shanghainese meals in her lifetime, was overawed!

So, once again, when in Hong Kong, try going out of the box, put away your normal guide book for a day or two and do some exploring! There are oh so many under-mentioned establishments in town offering great, tasty, non-Cantonese Chinese provincial food.
Check out www.openrice.com for inspirational ideas!

Drunken Chicken

OMG, this Shanghainese Smoked Fish was to die for! Best rendition eaten anywhere!

One of my favorite 'cold' plate - Strange tasting chicken.

Fried baby Eels - Sweet, crispy and so addictive

Stirred fried eel with yellowing chives. So good! Speechless!

A more delicate dish: Braised gluten with Ginko nuts, Chinese Ham and Shang Tong Chicken broth

Sauteed fish filet with Chinese rice wine and wood fungus. Fresh, wild ocean fish used here....unlike North America who tried to cut cost and use inferior Basa or Talapia products! Yuck!!

Slight disappointment. Sesame pancake unfortunately not crispy enough.

One big family size bowl of ' Nappa Cabbage, Chicken and Chinese Yunnan Ham Hock Soup '. That umami ladened broth was so good!

One of my all time favorite - Steamed Chinese Yunnan Ham with Honey and Wine served with pancake and crispy crackers for added textural interplay

Pancakes

Crispy crackers

Fried Scallions with Sakura shrimp Lo-Mien

Broth filled meat pot-sticker buns

Special 8-Treaure Dessert Rice steamed in whole pumpkin.
